The black leopard, often called a black panther, is a melanistic variation of the leopard (Panthera pardus). Its dark coat is due to excess black pigmentation (melanism), but its rosette markings are still visible under certain lighting. These elusive big cats are primarily found in dense forests of Asia and Africa, with notable populations in Kenya, India, and Thailand.
In Africa, black leopards are extremely rare, with confirmed sightings in Laikipia, Kenya, making it one of the few places where they have been photographed in the wild. Their dark coat helps them blend into dense vegetation, making them superb nocturnal hunters.
